Heritage Week edition records town's years of progress

This week’s edition of The Maple Leaf is our “heritage edition” to mark Port Dover’s past 131 years of progress as a community. The spirit of growth in its citizens that in 1879 broke away from being part of the Township of Woodhouse to become the incorporated “Village of Port Dover” continues today. Since then the generations of people who called this place home have created a community that has its own proudly unique character.

This edition attempts to tell the stories of those who laboured, loved and lived here before us. It is a big story full of colourful characters, developments big and small, hopes and dreams with the ensuing successes and failures.

The staff of The Maple Leaf appreciates all the “friends of Dover” who sent their favourite old photos, those who wrote stories for this edition and all the businesses that advertised.

The year 2010 marks Port Dover’s 131st year. The year looks promising as indications for future growth will be in tourism and residential development. Our proud past should be the light that leads us forward.
