Laker rowers win gold and bronze
Marcus Snow and Scott Fairley of Port Dover Composite School captured gold and bronze respectively at the Dennis Morris Novice Sprints in St. Catharines last weekend.
Competing against over 40 novice high school rowers in the Men’s Junior Lightweight event, Marcus Snow won with a personal best time of 5:28.2 – more than six seconds ahead of the second place finisher. Scott Fairley placed third narrowly missing a “one two” finish for Port Dover. Fairley had a personal best time of 5:35.2 just a tenth of second out of second place.
Snow was introduced to rowing last fall when he registered for the fall high school Learn to Row program with the Silver Lake Rowing Club. Fairley has participated in the Silver Lake Rowing Club’s Youth Rowing Program for several years. For both, it’s their first year of rowing competitively.
According to Coach Sue Fairley, “We’re looking forward to see what Scott and Marcus can do on the water together in a double. They’ve certainly achieved a good level of physical fitness through their training and show good indoor rowing skills. But the next step is to transfer that on to the water where the real racing happens.”
