County staff proposes alternatives to new washroom facilities in Port Dover
By LYN TREMBLAY
Norfolk County staff has come up with an idea they hope will alleviate the lack of public washrooms in Port Dover and save money at the same time.
General Manager of Community Services Bill Hett told The Maple Leaf that it has been suggested that the county purchase a washroom trailer which can be temporarily hooked up to the town’s sewer system. He has spoken with the Board of Trade and Port Dover businesspeople and says the proposal has been well received.
“We will be bringing a report to council to suggest that perhaps we should look at the whole concept. Rather than build a new structure we should rethink the current base service. Rather than buy land which is expensive we maybe should look at providing a different service.”
Mr. Hett says the trailer could move around Norfolk County, providing extra services for events such as Panorama, Pumpkinfest and Bayfest.
During recent budget approvals, councillors were told a design concept which would double the size of the existing facility on St. George Street is projected to cost $300,000, which includes the cost of purchasing additional property. Councillors voted to reduce the budget by $50,000.
