APRIL's Friday the 13th in Port Dover
It was a cool April day -- just as predicted -- and the bikers came to Port Dover for Friday the 13th. The crowds were not here as early as usual in the morning but by mid-day bikes lined both sides of Main Street for several blocks. There were several thousand bikes in town throughout the day. As one local observer said, "this is what we thought was a busy biker day ten years ago."
But everyone agreed that many people are waiting for the next Friday the 13th which comes in July. Some people predict that July 13th will be the biggest Biker Day in Port Dover ever. That means that crowds will exceed 100,000 people and bikes will be angled parked along both sides of the Main Street with a third strip down the middle of the street for at least eight full blocks with more parked on the side streets.
There were no reported problems. Police were patrolling the town on Harley Davidsons, bicycles and foot. Vendors were set up in the downtown Powell Park and along the waterfront area. There was a cold breeze throughout the day but no rain. At some points during the day, the sun appeared but indoor restaurant and bars were reporting a brisk business with outdoor venues (even under a tent) were less well attended.
The peak crowds were reported in the early afternoon. By late afternoon many bikes were headed out of town.
