Alternative washroom proposal will save money

By LYN TREMBLAY

Port Dover Board of Trade is being credited with proposing an alternative solution to Port Dover’s washroom shortage.
Instead of adding to the existing washrooms on St. George Street as earlier proposed and approved in the recent budget, the county will now purchase a trailer equipped with nine washrooms, including two designed for the physically disabled, three men’s urinals and infant change tables. The trailer will be connected to municipal services for the summer season and will be parked on land between Walker Street and Harbour Street fronting Main Street and leased from the Schneider family.
Community Services General Manager Bill Hett informed councillors at last week’s council meeting that the trailer would become part of the county’s fleet. While it would remain in Port Dover for the busy summer season, it could be disconnected from municipal services and transported to other communities to meet the need for additional facilities at other events.
The trailer will also be heated which pleased Councillor Charlie Luke who said the fact that it could be moved was the “icing on the cake”. “Panorama (in Simcoe) will finally have heated washrooms!” he added.
This alternative solution will save taxpayer dollars as well. It is expected to cost $155,000 to purchase with an annual operating budget of approximately $55,000, in total a savings of $177,000 over the initial proposal of constructing additional washrooms on the existing site.
“This is a creative solution to a problem that has existed for quite some time in Port Dover,” stated Councillor John Wells.
