Robert Dennis wins Perch Derby boat

OPP Sergeant Peter Penman of the Norfolk Detachment visited Doverwood Public School on Monday during Police Week and explained basic rules of safety for bicyclists. He explained hand signals, rules of the road, and that the law says every bicycle must have a bell or warning device. On the day of his visit only five students had ridden a bicycle to school. It was explained there are usually eight to ten but fewer that day because of the threat of rain.
This is both Police Week and Canada Safety Week.
Sergeant Penman drove the detachment’s new black and white police cruiser which had arrived on Friday. It is a 2007 Ford Crown Victoria model. It has the police package equipment and powered by a V8 engine.
The Ontario Provincial Police are changing back to the black and white paint style from all-white cruisers. Sgt. Penman commented that when he joined the OPP 22 years ago all cruisers were painted black and white. Then it took four years for all the black and white cruisers to be replaced by the all-white vehicles province-wide. He believes this transition will require less time before all cruisers on the road have the two-tone colour scheme. Sgt. Penman has served in Norfolk for over 18 years.
During Police Week, Ontario Provincial Police in Norfolk will be participating in a host of activities with community partners.
This week, police, fire, ambulance, local funeral homes, Haldimand - Norfolk Health Unit, a local tow truck company, and taxi service have partnered to present “Choose Your Ride” at area high schools. The OPP says “the program gives students the opportunity to view the various rides that are available, if they choose to consume intoxicating substances.” By viewing the display of vehicles, police hope students will make the right choice when “Choosing their Ride”.
Officers will also be visiting various businesses throughout the County to educate employees on counterfeit currency.
Voluntary bicycle safety inspections will also be taking place at schools across the county to ensure that the young students are riding safe and legal bicycles. As well officers will be at local farms educating migrant farm workers on bicycle safety and the importance of being seen when riding at night. Reflective traffic safety vests will be distributed to the migrant farm workers, compliments of local businesses.
